Hail Mary Full of Grace, Punch the Devil in the Face – by Deacon Marty McIndoe

I cannot not take credit for that title. It is the actual title of the image produced by artist Elizabeth Zelasko based upon a 13th century image. A friend of mine gave me the image and I found it quite interesting. It made me think of writing this article, written on the feast day of Mary, Mother of the Church. The image is available at www.elizabethzelasko.com starting at $40.00.

Mary, Mother of the Church is a recently assigned memorial (2018), however the title goes back for many centuries, at least until the time of St. Augustine. As the memorial readings indicate in the Gospel, it is based upon John 19:25-34 where at the foot of the cross, Jesus “gives” His Mother to John and “gives” John to His Mother. Some people say that Jesus did this to “protect” His Mother, since after His death she would have no male family members. There certainly may be some truth in that, HOWEVER, I believe that Jesus did that to protect John, and in essence, all of us. Jesus knew that His mother was strong, holy and pure. He knew that she was the Spouse of the Holy Spirit and was the perfection of humankind. Jesus also knew that the Devil, who had tempted and attacked Him on many occasions would do the same to His body, the Church. He knew that Mary could help us fight the devil off.

Jesus knew of the Old Testament sayings showing that a new Eve would come who would undo the damage done by the original Eve on behalf of the devil (see Genesis 3:15). The Early Church fathers saw Mary as the new Eve. Just as the old Eve listened to the Devil and brought sin in to the world, Mary, the new Eve listened to God’s holy angel and said YES to bringing Jesus in to the world as the answer to sin. In the book of Judith, the brave widow crushes the head of the enemy delivering her people from ultimate destruction. The Church often applies the praise given originally to Judith, to Mary saying, “Blessed are you, daughter by the Most High God, above all women on earth.” In the book of Exodus (25) the Ark of the Covenant held the Word of God and demons trembled before it. Mary is seen as the new Ark of the Covenant holding the Word of God. Demons tremble before her.

The New Testament also shows how Mary, in her humble YES to God, devastated the Devil by undoing what the original Eve did in saying Yes to the Devil. It is because of her YES to God that the Word became flesh, salvation entered history and Satan’s power over humanity began to collapse. Read Mary’s magnificat in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55) to see this. Also the book of Revelation talks about the Woman clothed with the sun defeating the devil. There are many other instances where we can see that Mary has so much power over Satan. Of course, she has this power because of her YES to God and God gives it freely to her. Jesus knew that Mary would help His brothers and sisters, THE CHURCH, stand up to and defeat Satan. I truly believe that Jesus gave Mary to us as our Mother, the Mother of the Church so that with her help, we could all punch the Devil in the face.

Obviously, if we see Mary as our Mother, we need to see Jesus as our Brother and God as our Father. Don’t forget that Mary is also known as the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Seeing ourselves within this Holy Family we can experience the power needed to fight off the difficulties of this life, especially those that may be caused by the Devil. We need to draw in to a deep relationship to Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit, and to the Church. Mary, in her various roles always calls us in to closeness to her Son, her Father and her Spouse. Mary, in the humility that she always shown, does not seek any glory for herself, only for the three persons of the Trinity. When we are in close union to Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit, the Devil has no hold upon us at all. Mary’s role is to help us grow closer to God. She exists to bring Jesus to all people and to help us in our walk with God. Whenever we do experience the temptations or attacks of the Devil, Mary is there to punch him in the face.

TRUST IN JESUS, Illness and God’s Glory – by Deacon Marty McIndoe

The same week that I celebrated my 79th birthday I found out from my Neurologist that I had Parkinson’s Disease. I have had difficulties with “shaky hands” since my mid 20’s and have been seeing a Neurologist for quite some time for them. They were diagnosed as benign familiar tremors. As I got older, these tremors worsened and my medication dosage was increased. I recently noticed a different kind of shaking in my hand and jaw and told my Neurologist who scheduled me for tests. It turns out that my shaky hands have graduated in to Parkinson’s Disease. Actually, my doctor tells me that I now have both. The shaky hands are quite manageable but when I looked at the symptons of Parkinsons Disease, it was apparent that I was facing something that affected every part of me. It was only in the fall that I had my last physical and my doctor told me that I was in good health. Most people who know me see me as an active person who looks and seems much younger that my age. I reveled in that. I planned on living out the life that God gives me as a healthy, active, young at heart person. I want to continue serving Him as best as I can.

This new diagnose and the accompaning symptons is not something that I wished for. I struggled with this for a couple of days and came to the conclusion that God has always taken care of me, and I have always trusted Him. I knew that this diagnosis does not change that. I still very much trust in Him and will continue to do so, no matter what. I know that God will use this illness of mine to show forth His glory. I attend a Friday night prayer meeting that brings me much joy and has brought many healings to a considerable amount of people. The leader there said that they will pray over me every Friday and that I will be healed. I plan on being prayed over every Friday and I do hope for a healing. Now, I have been involved in various healing ministries since 1971 and I have seen many absolutely miraculous healings. BUT, I have also seen many people not receive any physical healings when prayed for. Sometimes people receive healings, and sometimes they don’t. I know that same rule applies to me.

Whether I receive a physical healing from this illness, or don’t, I do know that God will work through this. I offer myself to Him to allow His will and His glory to shine through me whether I am healed or not. I TRUST IN JESUS fully and I trust in His will for me. God knows what is best for me and for His people. My desire is to serve Him in whatever way I can. Since my ordination as a RC Deacon in 1980, I have received such pleasure from serving Him and His people. I do want to continue to do this as long as I possilbly can, but I also know that God’s will is so much better that what I can think of. If He grants me a physical healing of this illness, then I will give glory to Him amongst His people. If He does not grant me a physical healing, then I will give glory to Him amongst His people by my trust in Him and the way I live out my life with Him. Either way, I know that God will use this illness for His Glory, I trust Him enough to know that for sure. I know that so many people suffer from so many different illnesses and problems. I have always been lifted up by the way so many of them show their love of God and place their trust in Him, no matter what. I pray that I may always Trust in Jesus and give glory to Him by the way I live out my life. I also pray that whatever you may now be going through, you will grow closer to Jesus, who loves us so much. I pray that you may always be filled with HOPE and Trust In Jesus. I pray that my journey with Him may help you in your journey with Him. God bless you and your loved ones. May you have the Peace of Jesus.
